Around 2000 years ago the Roman occupiers built the Via Augusta, connecting the Pyrennes to Cadiz. On it’s 1500km passage the Via Augusta passes through Traiguera, and offers walkers and cyclists some great routes. Follow it south towards Cabanes (60km, moderate) via the towns of Sant Mateu and La Salzadella, or head north to Puente de San Joan del Pas on the Catalalonian border and onwards to Tortosa (45km, moderate).
Technical trails are not far away, with some thrilling descents from Ermita de Sant Josep de La Salzadella and Mare de Deu Angèls near Sant Mateu.
Not far from La Salzadella is a unique and remarkable location for walkers and cyclists alike. Lo Carreró de la Canal, a natural alley through the pine forests on the top of the mountain are perfect terrain for mountain biking and takes you through a distinctive landscape. Thanks to the high rock walls and natural humidity, plants are able to grow here that would more typically be expected in humid forests much further north.

Casa de Olivos is central to two spectacular national parks suited to cyclists and dedicated to preserving wildlife and the natural landscape.
To our north, la Tinença de Benifassà crosses the provincial borders of Castellon and Teruel. Notable as home to some of Spain’s best preserved forests, you can follow the network of signposted hiking and cycling routes linking up the seven towns in La Tinença - Bel, Ballestar, Boixar, Castell de Cabres, Coratxà, Fredes and La Pobla de Benifassà - enabling visitors to experience the rare delights of this well-conserved nature area. Road cyclists as well as gravel and MTB riders will love the mountainous terrain, pretty towns and stunning scenery.
Heading south from Casa de Olivos is the Sierra de Irta, where unspoiled mountains meet a rugged Mediterranean coastline. The preservation here has benefitted many bird species and is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Ride along the coast between the towns of Peñiscola and Alcossebre, or discover the trails that traverse the mountains - gravel and MTB cyclists have plenty to enjoy here beside the awesome views.
Casa de Olivos is in the rural north of Castellón province where the roads are quiet and stunning views are standard. It's the ideal base for road cycling, with easy access to coast and country.
With so many mountains nearby there are plenty of challenging climbs to try including the Puerto de Querol on the way to Morella (1050m), Mont Caro in la Tinença de Benifassà (1400m), and the Mirador de Vallibona (700m) to name just three.
Elsewhere inland, you’ll find sweeping roads, almost deserted, connecting the little villages and towns where you can stop for a look around, or for refreshments, before heading off to discover somewhere new. Enjoy the blend of sweeping descents and staccato climbs with a backdrop of breath-taking scenery. We have a few circular road routes mapped out for you to try, or you can use the tourist information in the apartments to help plan your own tour.
And since the coast is only 15km from Casa de Olivos it’s easy to get some sea views on your ride too. Ride the back roads into Vinaros, and turn south towards the resorts of Benicarlo and Peñiscola, hugging the coastline before looping back through the hills to Traiguera.
However you like to road ride, there is plenty here to challenge and delight you.
After a long day in the saddle, giving tired muscles a helping hand can be really beneficial. That’s why we’ve teamed up with local massage therapist José Luis Vacquero Gallench.
